7 Warning Signs of a Gas Leak and What to Do Safely
A suspected gas leak in Melbourne should always be treated seriously. Natural gas and LPG can create fire and explosion risks, while faulty fuel-burning appliances may also produce carbon monoxide, which has no smell or colour.
The safest response is to leave the danger area and contact the appropriate emergency service. Do not attempt to locate or repair a leak yourself.
Seven warning signs to recognise
1. A strong sulphur or rotten-egg smell
Natural gas is given a distinctive odour so leaks are easier to notice. A persistent gas smell inside or around a property needs urgent investigation.
2. Hissing near a pipe, meter or appliance
An unusual hissing or whistling sound may indicate escaping gas. Do not move closer to investigate if the smell is strong.
3. A flame that burns yellow or behaves unusually
Many gas appliances should produce a stable flame when operating correctly. A yellow, sooty or unstable flame can indicate a combustion or ventilation problem and should be assessed by a qualified gasfitter.
4. Pilot lights that repeatedly go out
Frequent pilot failure may be caused by an appliance fault, ventilation issue or supply problem. Repeatedly relighting it without a diagnosis is not a safe long-term response.
5. Headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion
These can be symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure, particularly when several people or pets become unwell indoors and improve outside. Get everyone into fresh air and seek urgent medical advice. In an emergency, call 000.
6. Unexplained dead or discoloured vegetation
A leak from an underground gas line may affect a patch of lawn or garden. This sign is not proof by itself, but it warrants professional investigation when combined with an odour or sound.
7. An unexpected increase in gas use
A higher bill may have many causes. If usage rises without a change in household habits, ask a licensed professional to check the appliances and installation.
What to do if you smell gas
- Do not use matches, lighters, candles or any naked flame.
- Do not operate light switches, power points, doorbells, fans or garage doors.
- Leave the building and keep other people away.
- From a safe location, call the emergency number shown on your gas bill. Victorian health guidance lists the gas leak and emergency service number as 132 771.
- If there is fire, immediate danger or someone is seriously unwell, call 000.
- Do not re-enter or restart appliances until the site has been declared safe by qualified personnel.
Victoria’s Department of Health also advises regular servicing and testing of gas heaters by a licensed or registered gasfitter. Read the current Victorian carbon monoxide safety advice for symptoms and emergency guidance.
Why licensed gas work matters
Gas installations require the right qualifications, testing equipment and compliance documentation. A gasfitter can pressure-test the installation, locate the fault, repair or replace components and check that appliances and ventilation are operating safely.
